New NDIS Funding Periods: What You Need to Know

What’s Changing?

If you’re an NDIS participant, or you help someone who is, you’ll soon notice a change in how funding is made available.

Starting 19 May 2025, the NDIS will release funds in smaller amounts over time, rather than giving access to the whole plan amount at once. This change only applies to new or reassessed plans.

What Are “Funding Periods”?

Think of funding periods as your NDIS plan being divided into smaller chunks. Instead of receiving all your funding upfront, you’ll get a portion of your funding every few months (usually every 3 months).

Here’s how it works:

  • ✅ You’ll still get the same total funding in your plan

  • ⏳ You can only use the funds that are available in your current funding period

  • 🔁 If you don’t use all your funds in one period, they roll over to the next one (as long as you’re still in the same plan)

  • 🚫 Unused funds won’t carry over when you start a brand new plan

How This Affects Cleaning & Gardening with Sistability

If we support you with cleaning or gardening services, this new funding system just means we’ll need to be a little more careful about how services are booked and budgeted.

We’ll help by:

  • Making sure your service agreement fits within your funding period

  • Adjusting schedules if needed to avoid running out of funds mid-plan

  • Talking to your support coordinator or plan manager (if you have one) to help keep everything on track

You’ll still get the support you need - we just need to be a bit more thoughtful about timing and budgets.

Why Is This Happening?

The NDIS is making these changes to:

  • Help people manage their budgets more easily

  • Make funding last throughout the whole plan

  • Prevent overspending or running out too soon

  • Make sure the funding is used fairly and safely

It’s similar to how other government programs work, providing smaller payments over time instead of one big lump sum.

Do You Need to Do Anything?

If your plan hasn’t changed recently, nothing has changed yet. You’ll only be affected once you receive a new or reassessed plan.

When that happens:

  • We’ll help you update your service agreement

  • We’ll work with you to create a realistic support schedule

  • If needed, we’ll talk to your plan manager or support coordinator to make sure everything stays on track
