What is NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a government initiative in Australia aimed at providing support and services to people with disabilities, empowering them to live more independently and participate fully in society.

How to receive NDIS funding?

Applying for the NDIS involves several key steps including; checking your eligibility, gathering supporting information from health professionals, and completing an Access Request Form. After you return your completed form to the NDIS, you’ll then need to wait for a decision. If you are approved, you will be contacted by the NDIS to arrange a planning meeting to discuss your support and funding needs.

Three different ways to manage your NDIS funding

Understanding the different ways to manage your NDIS funding is crucial for participants to maximise their support and independence. The NDIS offers three main options: NDIA-managed, plan-managed, and self-managed.

  1. NDIA-Managed Funding: Also known as Agency-managed, this option is where the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) manages your funds. The NDIA pays providers directly, and participants must choose from NDIS-registered providers. This option minimises the paperwork and financial management burden on the participant.

  2. Plan-Managed Funding: In this option, a Plan Manager (an independent provider) handles the financial aspects of your plan. This includes paying invoices and managing financial reporting. Plan management offers greater flexibility than NDIA management because you can choose both registered and non-registered providers, while still reducing the administrative workload on the participant.

  3. Self-Managed Funding: Participants who choose this option manage their own NDIS funds. This provides the highest level of control and flexibility, allowing participants to select any provider and negotiate costs. However, self-management requires participants to handle all administrative tasks, including payment processing and record-keeping. This option is ideal for those who want complete control over their support and are comfortable with the associated responsibilities.
